After the great Kool-aid disaster of 2011 we spent a quiet evening at home watching An Affair to Remember. Thank you TCM. Sometime during the night the rain moved in to stay and it has been steadily wet all day. The question seems to be ‘do I want to get wet or do I want to get soaked’… So, being the namby-pamby I am, I choose neither. I spent the entire morning inside writing. I didn’t even make it to the behind-the-corner coffee house.
But I must say the best part about staying at home alone in the rain is-- I can do whatever I want. Feeling the need to be active I decided to work on my yoga. Oh, you didn’t know I could do yoga? Well I can’t. After failing miserably and probably pulling a muscle I switched from stretching to cardio. Since jogging outside was out of the question and a treadmill didn't fit in my carry on; I went to the next best thing… dancing around ridiculously in my wool socks and long johns to The Nutcracker. I’m in Alaska, who cares! This lasted entirely too long for my age but I did work up a sweat. Mission accomplished.
Realizing the weather was set on its automatic sprinkler system I donned my Alaska weather hat and set out to soak up (or get soaked) more Sitka beauty. Feeling ambitious I decided to walk down to one of the island parks a good stretch from our abode. About two minutes into the walk I wimped out and headed down town (way way closer). I went to check out the local Russian Orthodox Church. Sadly, the doors were locked and no one was home.
Feeling a bit dejected I headed down the street to the local Pharmacy/soda fountain (where they make their own waffle cones) yum!!! That’s right, I’ve been here 3 days and I’ve already memorized the way from my house to the closest ice cream parlor but I have yet to locate my mailbox. Priorities people.
On the up side we are renting a couple of bicycles from a guy Scott is working with in exchange for beer. Apparently beer works as currency up here. Next week’s forecast is a sunshine and clear sky all week so we are really hoping to hit the hiking trails and get out into nature. Bears should be in hibernation so I think we’ll have a great time.
Scott has liked his rotation so far at the hospital. It’s not a big place so I feel like he’s getting good instruction. The Indian Health Services has a really strong program and the more he learns about it the better he likes it. He’s looking to also apply for a residency with them for next year… in Anchorage, AK. He has 6 other hospitals he will be interviewing with across the Pacific Northwest as well so, we’ll see.
Hugs and Kisses,
Zaphod… I mean
